Toothbrushing used to be the hardest part of our day.
My oldest son, Liam, who has Down Syndrome, struggled with intense oral sensitivities. Mint toothpaste was “too spicy,” and the fruity options all had a bitter aftertaste. Every night felt stressful—my husband and I constantly tried new toothbrushes, flavors, timers, songs—anything to make brushing tolerable and keep his teeth clean. Nothing worked. I yearned for a calm bedtime routine—bath, brush, and a cozy story without anxiety.
As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I heard the same frustrations from so many other parents. I knew there had to be a better way. With my experience as both an SLP and a mom of four, it finally clicked: children learn through play. When kids learn to eat, they explore first—they touch, smell, taste, and play before they truly eat. Why should toothbrushing be any different? Children need the same playful introduction to oral care.
That realization sparked the idea for Smile Paint®️, a creative, playful approach to toothbrushing that transforms brushing from a battle into a positive experience.
